Threat Thursday
Ransomware scams are a serious online threat that can lock you out of your files and demand a ransom to regain access. But how can you spot these scams before it’s too late? First, always pay attention to suspicious emails or messages that ask you to click on links or download attachments. These often have poor grammar and unrecognizable senders; these are red flags!
Another aspect to watch for is unusual prompts for payment. If a pop-up claims your computer is locked because of illegal activity and demands payment via unconventional methods (like gift cards), don’t engage. Real companies will never ask for payments this way.
Keep an eye on unexpected software installations too—malicious software can sneak its way onto your device without you knowing. Regularly updating your security software is vital to protect against new threats.
So how can you avoid being caught out by ransomware scams? Ensure your files are regularly backed up on a secure external drive or cloud service—this way, you won’t lose important data even if you encounter ransomware. Educate yourself and your family about the signs of these scams, and encourage everyone to think before they click.
