For those unfamiliar with Shropshire, historically known as Salop and abbreviated as Shrops, it is a ceremonial county in the West Midlands of England, bordering Wales. It is surrounded by Cheshire to the north, Wrexham to the northwest, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the southeast, Herefordshire to the south, and Powys to the west. The largest settlement is Telford, while Shrewsbury serves as the county town.
Shropshire spans an area of 3,487 km² (1,346 square miles) and has a population of 498,073. Telford (155,570) and Shrewsbury (76,782) are the major towns, with other market towns like Oswestry (15,613), Bridgnorth (12,212), and Newport (11,387) adding to the county’s charm. For local governance, Shropshire is divided into two unitary authority areas: Shropshire, and Telford and Wrekin.
The county features a diverse landscape, being generally flat in the north and hilly in the south. The Shropshire Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, cover about a quarter of the county, including notable features like the Wrekin, Clee Hills, Stiperstones, the Long Mynd, and Wenlock Edge. The Fenn’s, Whixall, and Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve, extending into Wales, occupy the low-lying northwest. The River Severn, the county’s major river, flows from the west, forming a wide, flat valley before exiting into Worcestershire south of Bridgnorth. Notably, the village of Edgmond, near Newport, holds the record for the lowest recorded temperature in England and Wales.
