Don’t Install Windows Updates

Don’t Install Windows Updates ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….…………………………………………………..immediately, until they have been tested in the real world.

Integrating patch management into your organisation’s security framework is essential, serving as a crucial layer within your comprehensive security strategy.

To adopt a faster and more agile approach to software development, in 2014 Microsoft restructured its Quality Assurance processes, which inevitably lead to release of critical updates that may not have undergone the same intensive testing as its other update channels.

In 2018 there was a Windows 10 update that was infamous for deleting user files.  More recently In November of 2023 a windows update stopped cameras working on specific laptop models, in some instances stopping users logging on to machines.

Microsoft will not be changing their deployment model, so we can only expect to experience further outages.  Don’t leave it to chance to know when your organisations machines are receiving updates.

The guidance is “don’t try and manage your IT, manage the RISK”

The best way to ensure you are not exposed to “bad” patches is to introduce a policy that installs patches a set number of days after their general release.  Also be aware a bad policy can leave systems exposed to know threats.

If you re looking to manage your risk, IT Lifeline can help.  If you have 1 machine or 300, our scalable baseline support product has patching, antivirus and remote management & monitoring (RMM) built in.  Packages are available as a single monthly upfront subscription with no long contracts.
